One suggestion we share with students frequently is to communicate with course mentors. Notify mentors when you have difficulty understanding coursework. Reaching out before the deadline provides the best chance for your success.

Cailyn Green, Ph.D., MS, CASAC is the assistant professor of Addiction Studies here at SUNY Empire State. She has worked in the clinical field of addiction with clients in inpatient, outpatient, long-term, and short-term recovery facilities. Her area of expertise is the recently incarcerated population. Professor Green earned her Ph.D. in criminal justice with a specialization in substance abuse and her master's degree in forensic mental health. As a New York State CASAC (credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor), she has been attending conferences to share her knowledge, and would like to share what she has learned with the college! ... Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological developmental disorder with an estimated prevalence of one to two percent of the population (U.S. Department of Labor, 2022). Neurodiversity, a term often used in the context of ASD, describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits (Baumer, 2021). November 11 is Veterans Day. Veterans Day dates back to the late 1910s and became a federal holiday in 1938. Many people tend to confuse the intent of Memorial Day with that of Veterans Day, but the difference is that Memorial Day commemorates service members who died fighting for our country, while Veterans Day commemorates every service member who served our country.
