Welcome to the Month of May! Since 1949, May has been recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health refers to our emotional and social well-being and impacts how we think, feel, and behave. According to the World Health Organization, “there is no health without mental health.” As the newest chapter of Active Minds, we are excited to spread awareness about mental health and help educate and empower our fellow students to make a difference. Applications are now open for scholarships for the 2022-23 year. Thanks to the college’s donors, more than $700,000 in scholarships will be distributed by the SUNY Empire State College Foundation to eligible students, beginning in the Fall 2022 term. SUNY Empire State College recently partnered with LifeWorks My Student Support Program (MySSP) to provide all students with no-cost, confidential access to mental health counseling services. The service offers support for students to call or text mental health professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

SUNY Empire State College has over 175 institutional scholarship opportunities for our students. For most of our scholarships, students are auto-matched based on the information submitted in the application and contained in the student record. This means you can submit one general application for scholarships to be considered for most.

At SUNY Empire State College, we take the protection of data very seriously and understand that confidentiality, integrity, and availability are vital to our college. In June, we will provide the highest level of security to protect our data with multi-factor authentication (MFA) technology. Beginning June 15, SUNY Empire State College will require faculty, staff, and students to use MFA when signing into Office 365 applications (including Outlook email). This month, we spoke with Thalia MacMillan about her work as a mentor, teacher, researcher, volunteer, and Star Wars fan. Thalia is an associate professor and mentor of community and human services, the department chair for the Health and Human Services department, as well as the point of contact for the BS in addiction studies program. She received both her MSW and Ph.D. in social work from Fordham University. In addition, Thalia serves on the editorial boards for six academic and professional journals. She is also an EMT-B with the volunteer ambulance squad in her community and serves as the captain in her squad. ... MORE

The goal of the SUNY Empire PRODiG Scholars Program is to support undergraduate and graduate student-scholars from historically underrepresented groups, including women in STEM disciplines, to progress into doctoral programs and faculty positions at institutions of higher learning. The 2021-22 Scholars cohort is comprised of 10 undergraduate and 10 graduate participants across various fields of study and at different stages of their journey toward a career in academia. Mindy Kronenberg, a mentor in the Humanities and the Arts at Empire State College served as our judge.Thank you to all who submitted a poem.
