Join us for Non-Traditional Student Week!
This week is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate you, our remarkable students who often juggle the competing responsibilities of work, family, and life while pursuing their educational goals here at Empire State University.
We start the week on Monday, November 7 at 6:30 p.m. as we begin the week of celebration with our kick-off followed by our virtual Empire State University Open Mic Night.
Check out all the offerings which are detailed below. We’re hosting events and engagement opportunities all week.

Whether you’re interested in performing, supporting a friend or colleague or just looking to mingle with fellow SUNY Empire students, the Open Mic Night is for you. If you want to be heard, bring your poetry and/or short stories, perform your spoken word, play your music or tell some jokes. It's your voice, it's your story and it's your Open Mic Night.

6:00 p.m. - Board & Brush (event is sold out)
Join us for a unique DIY wood sign making workshop from the comfort of your home.
Students who register will be mailed a kit to their homes. The kit contains everything you need to make your very own 14x14 wood sign! The kits contain a stained wooden board, instruction guide, stencil, brushes, rags, paint cups, paints, sand paper and a mixing color guide. When registering students can pick from one of three designs. We will then meet on Tuesday at 6pm and design together!
8:00 p.m. - NailedIt! (event link)
You may have heard of the hit Netflix show, Nailed It, well this is SUNY Empire's version! Participants will be asked to recreate a craft using items they find around their home. The person who comes closest to the original craft will be the winner. We ask that everyone who wishes to participate be willing to have their cameras on. This event can also be a great one for children and families to participate in! There will be prizes for the top pieces.
6:00 p.m. In-Person Gathering
6:30-8:00 p.m. Paul Wesselmann presents, Feel Better! Think Better! Do Better!
Join Paul Wesselmann to learn about tips, ideas, and strategies to help people manage stress, burnout, and all the stuff going on in their lives as he presents, Feel Better! Think Better! Do Better! Unleash them on you to be more effective in school, work, and life! This is a family-friendly event, and every attendee will receive a special gift after the event from Paul!
Paul Wesselmann is a writer, speaker, and educator with over 25 years of experience helping individuals and teams deepen their effectiveness and enjoyment of work, school, and life. He holds degrees in psychology and higher education, is the author of two books, and his inspirational emails ripple out to 30,000 subscribers weekly.
We will be hosting this in-person event at several of our university locations (Brooklyn, Cheektowaga, Hartsdale, Rochester, Saratoga Springs, Selden, and Syracuse). Come in and enjoy a bite to eat, mingle with fellow Empire State University students and hear from Paul.

6:30 p.m. - Comedians in the Kitchen (event link)
Gather your family around a laptop and join in on this hilarious and interactive comedy show and cooking class!
You don’t want to miss this one! The chef/comedians zoom into your kitchen to lead you through a step-by-step culinary experience where you’ll learn to take a basic recipe of Honey Sirachi Turkey Meatballs, and make it something divine! We will also be pairing this culinary delight with a refreshing mocktail. I mean, what more could you ask for?!?!
8:00 p.m. - Non- Traditional Student Week Closing Event (event link)
Join in the fun! SUNY Empire is bringing back its popular mobile scavenger hunt. Students can participate at home or out in your community. There are missions to accomplish on a daily basis, participate or attend the various programs offered celebrating SUNY Empire students. The student with the highest amount of points will receive SUNY Empire swag, the three runners up will also receive a prize. SUNY Empire NonTrad Student Week Scavenger Hunt, 2022 kicks off on Monday, November 7 at 12:01 a.m. and runs through Sunday, November 13 at 11:59 p.m.
