Students who are involved at their university are more successful. SUNY Empire promotes involvement in student clubs/organizations, events, workshops, and discussions..
The Office of Student Engagement offers you the opportunity to network and interact with students across the state through virtual and in-person events, presentations, and conferences. These student development opportunities enhance your education and add to your resume.
The student development opportunities we offer are all listed on SUNY Empire Connects. Additionally, SUNY Empire Connects advertises experiences from different departments around the university that enhance students’ academic programs and overall experience.

About SUNY Empire Connects
SUNY Empire Connects offers a collection of virtual programs intended to provide our student community with virtual and in-person engagement opportunities. Topics range from career development, academic and study skills workshops, health and wellness activities, art exhibits, club/organization events, opportunities to connect with fellow students, drop-in hours with faculty, and more!
You can access the SUNY Empire Connects schedule anytime, but check your email each Friday as we highlight select sessions for the upcoming week. Please check back often, as we are always adding new sessions!
We are always welcoming new sessions and want to know what topics are important to you. If you are interested in presenting a SUNY Empire Connects session, please submit a session. If there is a topic you would like to see again or you have a suggestion for a new topic, email us and let us know!
Clubs and Organizations
Are you interested in becoming more active in the student community at Empire State University? Consider joining one of Empire State University's recognized clubs, student organizations, or interest groups.
If there isn't something you’re interested, check out the process to start your own.
Getting involved in a student organization, interest group, or club is the best way to explore new ideas and experiences, as well to make new friends.
There are a few different paths you can take when looking to form a student group at SUNY Empire. The three types of groups we recognize are:
- Interest Groups: Students who meet to discuss common interests.
- Clubs: Officially recognized groups of students who elect leadership positions and are able to apply for funding to support initiatives and activities.
- Organizations: Officially recognized body of students affiliated with an outside group (ex. honor society), a specific university department, or a governance group.
Empire State University is committed to enhancing the curricular and co-curricular experience of students. We have established processes to assist students in developing and sustaining student groups.

You do not have to be a hardcore gamer to join one of our teams. We also encourage casual, non-competitive play between students. Our Discord server facilitates both casual and competitive activities. Empire State University esports athletes come from across New York state and represent all ages and academic disciplines.
AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
The Office of Student Engagement offers a variety of awards and scholarships to recognize and support students' achievements, leadership, and commitment to service. These opportunities are designed to celebrate excellence in academics, campus involvement, and community engagement while helping students pursue their educational goals.

Empire State University is excited to announce that nominations are now open for the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence for 2024 and 2025.
Nominations are being accepted for current SUNY Empire students with a graduation date between June 2024 and May 2025.

Ideal nominees are students who have demonstrated integration of SUNY excellence in many aspects of their lives, which must include at least three of the following areas:
- Academics
- Leadership
- Diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
- Campus involvement, civics & service
- Research and development
- The arts (creative or performing)
Thank you for your consideration. Recognition of a student’s success on their journey with SUNY Empire is powerful and appreciated.
This award was established in the will of Hannah S. Hirschhorn in honor of her brothers, Benjamin and David Scharps who were attorneys. The gift for the award was accepted by the SUNY Board of Trustees in 1974. The funds have been used to award juniors who are prelaw or have an interest in legal studies. As per the bequest, the prize is awarded to a student who writes the best legal essay on the subject determined by the Chancellor or designee. First Prize is $1500, Second Prize is $1000.
Requirements of the scholarship:
- The student must be an undergraduate student
- Have the equivalent of Junior status
- Have an interest in Law or Legal Studies
Applicants must submit a 2,000 word essay that is repsponsive to the chosen topic and follows the instructions and essay parameters to be considered.
