


Graduate Nondegree Courses

Taking Courses at the Master's Level
Nondegree (nonmatriculated) students may enroll in a limited selection of courses offered by the School for Graduate Studies each term (fall, spring and summer). Please see the term guide for more information about course offering and restrictions. Graduate level course numbers range from 5000 to 8999.
Applicants for nonmatriculated study in the School for Graduate Studies must provide an official transcript verifying completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university.
Graduate Nonmatriculated Study Request:
- Apply for graduate nonmatriculated study through the online application. Applications for the fall 2025 term will be considered until August 15.
- Please have an official transcript verifying completion of a bachelor's degree sent to the Empire State University Admissions Office, 111 West Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. If using an electronic service, have the email sent to Admissions@sunyempire.edu.
- After we review your request and your transcript, you will be notified by the School for Graduate Studies whether or not you are accepted. If you are eligible for nonmatriculated study, you will receive an email from the School for Graduate Studies with information on getting started.

Graduate Nondegree Information
When taking courses at the graduate level, nondegree (nonmatriculated) students:
- must be in good academic and financial standing with the university;
- may enroll in a limited selection of courses offered by the School for Graduate Studies each term (fall, spring and summer);
- must provide an official transcript verifying completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution prior to acceptance as a nonmatriculated student; and
- are not eligible for financial aid.
Transition from Nondegree Student to Degree-Seeking Student
Successful completion of courses as a nonmatriculated student will be considered in admissions decisions but will not automatically qualify an individual for admission to a graduate program.
M.A.T. Students: Nonmatriculated Field Experience Policy
- Nonmatriculated students are exempt from any field experience requirements associated with education courses offered through the university's M.A.T. program; and
- If you successfully complete an education course(s) offered through the university's M.A.T. program as a nonmatriculated student and later are admitted to this program, you must fulfill the field experience requirement(s) by the end of the first year.
