Examinations are offered on a case by case basis.  To register contact the Office of Veteran & Military Education at examtestcenter@esc.edu

DSST Exam Costs

As a fully-funded site, SUNY Empire waives the registration fee for Active duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Reserve Coast Guard spouses and their respective Civil Service employees. Administration and examination fees are paid by DANTES. You must present the Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card, DD Form 1173 at time of testing.

Discharged Veterans and military retirees: May be eligible for reimbursement from the Veterans Administration. Visit www.gibill.va.gov for information.

The DSST Examination Fee of $85 is due at the time of your scheduled appointment. You will pay with your credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard or AMEX) directly in the testing system. The registration fee for taking your exam at SUNY Empire State College is $25 and is due at the time of registration.

Eligible military candidates who take a CLEP or DSST exam can have the $85 exam fee waived for the first attempt per subject funded by DANTES. If a test taker tests at an on-base or fully funded test center, they do not have to pay the test center administrative fee. Eligible military candidates should contact a test center to find out if they are responsible for paying the test center's administrative fee.

DANTES does not pay the exam fee for a previously funded CLEP or DSST exam. If military test takers want to retake an exam previously funded by DANTES, they need to wait three months and pay the $85 exam fee in addition to the administrative fee required by the test center.

Testing Center Schedule

The DSST examinations are administered online, and will be available at our Saratoga Springs location. Examinations are offered on a case by case basis.  Contact the Veteran & Military Resource Center with questions, or to schedule a DSST examination at examtestcenter@sunyempire.edu

You can earn credit for prior college-level learning and apply it toward your associate or bachelor's degree. Your personal faculty mentor will help you determine what relevant college-level learning you already have.

Transfer credit from other colleges is one source of such prior college-level learning. Other sources include:

  • licenses and training, from the military, law enforcement, real estate profession
  • standardized exams, such as CLEP, DANTES, DSST, etc.

For more details on credit for prior learning, including relevant learning that has been evaluated by Empire State College, the American Council on Education (ACE) or the National College Credit Recommendation Services (National CCRS) view the student degree planning and prior learning assessment guides.
