Get on the fast track to becoming a certified teacher with SUNY Empire’s combined
bachelor’s and master of arts in teaching program.
This fully online dual degree pathway lets you earn both degrees at once, saving time,
reducing costs, and helping you launch your teaching career sooner. With New York
State–approved certification tracks in English, social studies, math, science, and languages,
this flexible M.A.T. online program prepares you to meet the needs of diverse learners.
You'll graduate with both a degree and the confidence to lead in today’s classrooms.
Choose one of three combined degree pathways:
B.A./B.S. in Cultural Studies to MAT in Adolescent Education Leading to Initial New
York State Teaching Certification in English Language Arts or Spanish
B.A./B.S. in Science, Mathematics and Technology to MAT in Adolescent Education Leading
to Initial New York State Teaching Certification in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science,
Physics or Mathematics
B.A./B.S. in Historical Studies to MAT in Adolescent Education Leading to Initial
New York State Teaching Certification in Social Studie
The combined program requires 154 total credits, including 42 at the graduate level
for the M.A.T. Students must complete 30 credits in their teaching subject area and
meet all college and state education requirements. Because the program is highly structured,
planning should start early—ideally in your first term. You’ll work closely with your mentor and the director of teacher education to design a degree
plan that meets both undergraduate and graduate requirements, including 12 graduate
credits taken during your bachelor’s studies.
The four graduate courses that will be taken during undergraduate study are:
EDUC 6010
Middle Childhood & Adolescent Development
EDUC 6005
US Schools in Social Context
EDUC 6015
Exceptionalities: Individualizing Learning
Teaching & Learning (choose one):
EDUC 6020
