We are pleased to announce that the 2024 Campus Climate Survey will launch on October 15, 2024, and will remain open until November 4 at 11:59 p.m. This important initiative helps us assess our campus atmosphere, identify our strengths, and identify areas for improvement. Your participation is invaluable in guiding the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’s efforts and resources and shaping Empire State University’s future.

If you choose to participate in the survey, you must submit your survey responses no later than November 4, at 11:59 p.m.

This year marks the final administration of the survey using our current survey instrument. Moving forward, we will leverage data from this survey to inform selection of a new, externally administered tool that better aligns with the university's evolving needs.

FAQ

The SUNY Empire Workplace Climate Survey is a tool we use to understand the experiences of those within our university community and to help us identify our strengths and areas for improvement. Specifically, the purpose of this survey is to gauge faculty and staff perceptions of general aspects of the university; supervisors and university leadership; diversity, equity, and inclusion; policies and procedures; professional development; promotional opportunities; resource availability; workload; and workplace civility.
The survey is sent to all line-based employees who are on the university payroll as of September 11, 2024. The primary HR appointment as staff or faculty dictates whether you receive the staff or faculty version of the survey.
The survey invitation will be sent to all line-based faculty members and staff via email on October 15. A unique survey link will be automatically generated with each email. One response is permitted per link, so it is important that you do not share your survey link with others. The email will come from decision.support@sunyempire.edu via SurveyMonkey.
No. All questions are optional. If you choose not to answer a question, you can still advance to other questions.
Yes, your responses are anonymous. Your privacy is important, and your answers will not be linked to your identity. We are committed to maintaining confidentiality and integrity in this process. We use SurveyMonkey and its anonymous responses option. Using this feature means that we do not track or store identifiable respondent information in survey results.
The Anonymous Responses option in SurveyMonkey allows email invitations to be tracked. This information is tied to the email invitation, not to individuals or survey results.
To ensure the protection of survey respondents, we do not include any subgroups with fewer than 10 respondents when conducting analyses between groups. Also, we do not analyze or report on combinations of demographic categories that would create small subgroups. All questions, including demographic questions, are optional.
Our response rate ranges from about 40% to 60%, which is considered a satisfactory response rate. Response rates for surveys of this nature vary. The 2021 faculty climate survey at Yale University had a 30% response rate. In 2022, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s climate survey response rate was 18.5%. University at Albany administered their biannual diversity climate survey in fall 2021, with a combined response rate of 17% from faculty and staff.
Data analysis will begin after the survey closes. We anticipate that results will be available in Spring 2025.
We are moving to a new survey instrument to ensure that we use the most efficient and effective tools for assessing our campus climate. The current survey instrument has been used since 2010. Our university has evolved, and we need a survey that reflects our changing needs and priorities. In addition, an outsourced survey will present more effective benchmarking opportunities, which will give us additional perspective when interpreting results.
Survey data will be used to ensure that the new survey addresses the current needs and concerns of our community. Further, our experience with administering the current survey instrument will help us determine requirements for a new instrument.
A working group composed of faculty, staff, and university leadership will be formed to ensure a diverse perspective in the selection process. This process will begin in Fall 2025.
