Cathryn ThurstonNew Microcredential in Terrorism and Counterterrorism

Cathryn Thurston, Ph.D., an associate professor and head of the security studies program at Empire State University, has launched a new microcredential in terrorism and counterterrorism.

"Terrorism happens quickly — it's hard to understand and difficult to counter," Thurston says. "Having a basic understanding saves time and could help any employee jump into a crisis and be helpful sooner."

The microcredential is made up of three classes: Introduction to Homeland Security, Perspectives in Terrorism, and Counterterrorism in a Changing World.

SUNY Empire Completes Early College Pilot

Nearly 275 high school students from New York City Public Schools participated in Empire State University's first-ever early college pilot. The program helps participants begin their college journey and gives them credit for courses they take.

The pilot demonstrates the potential for early college initiatives geared to a new student population. To enhance the program, the university has launched an Early College Working Group that will evaluate and assess the program over the next year. They will make recommendations to strengthen the program as it continues to evolve.

The university will also explore other partnership opportunities, early college to degree pathways, and strategies to support young college learners, with a focus on workforce development.
