A Letter From President Vollendorf

President Vollendorf

At Empire State University, we often speak about the power of public higher education to change lives. This issue of Connections is a celebration of that transformative spirit.

As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we pause to reflect on this solemn milestone in our nation's history and to honor those who have dedicated their lives to service in the years that followed. We also recognize the resilience, leadership, and commitment to community that emerged from that tragedy and continue to inspire us today.

In the following pages, you will read stories of Empire alumni whose lives and career choices were shaped by 9/11 — from first responders and journalists to diplomats, educators, and public historians. Their work reminds us of the enduring responsibility we share to carry forward the legacy of 9/11 with purpose.

This year offers additional opportunities for reflection. As Empire marks its 55th anniversary, and our nation celebrates its 250th birthday, we are reminded that progress is built through the vision and determination of individuals who choose to create a better future for others.

Throughout this issue of Connections, you will read about alumni who embody the ideals of opportunity, innovation, and transformation, which have defined Empire's story as well as America's from their beginnings. From graduates working in public service like U.S. Ambassador Rachna Korhonen '90, to those preserving the historical record of 9/11 for future generations such as Pamela Yoder '17 and Seth Morgan '23, their stories reflect the impact of an Empire education grounded in access and flexibility.

You will also learn about a new academic offering, a microcredential in terrorism and counterterrorism designed to prepare students to address complex global challenges.

At 55 years young, Empire is growing each year in service to our access mission and the 18,500 students we serve today. Our success is made possible by you and our entire alumni community, which now numbers more than 105,000 graduates strong.

Thank you for your enduring commitment to Empire State University. I look forward to the many ways we will continue to honor our past while shaping a stronger, more inclusive future for learners around the world.

Lisa Vollendorf, Ph.D.
